Both are based on similar games (in fact, there was even a crossover game for the 3DS). Both are best enjoyed with previous knowledge of the main series, but can act as the entry point for their franchises. The Layton movie is definitely better as a stand-alone anime product, but fans of the originals will really appreciate seeing these characters in full anime.
