Both had solid foundations for a memorable story, and both failed to use their potential resulting in disappointingly bland animes.
I consider these two animes very deep and similar. As they are also based on the story 'Night on the Galactic Railroad', where the characters of both stories see themselves as Giovanni and Campanella. Both animes have a lot of focus on literature.
Both animes are focused on the characters' deep relationships, both in love and in their friendships, and on how they deal with unpleasant situations in their lives.
