Both by Studio Ghibli, similar atmosphere, no magical elements, both movies are about high school life and love affairs.

Both are from the same company and embody the same sort of mood; they're also both very simplistic, yet ultimately heartwarming and uplifting teenage romances. The main characters are also of similar ages, and although Shizuku is very different to Ume, you can imagine the two being friends.
Fans of one will likely enjoy the other.

Both are about girl in Japan including her life in school. Both are similar nature. Made by studio Ghibli.
Both anime are made by Studio Ghibli and have a similar mood. They do not have magical or fantasy elements, instead they focus on school life and romance between students. Both are uplifting and have some bittersweet moments, as well as some coming of age elements, which make these two anime very similar.
