Both shows explore the life of a high school music band and the members' lives. K-on is more cheerful and moe-like, while Given explores a lot of deep topics, but in both cases characters turn to music for expression. Both shows go into details of music-making, but each in a different way, the art tones and the ambiance are also kind of similar.

Both focus around a group of characters making sucessful music their friendship and of course the amount of feels trips that happens a long the way.

Given is basically K-On, but a Shounen Ai. Both animes are Slice Of Life/Band animes, and they're both very good. Both of the main characters are also similar in a way, in that they both at the start, don't know anything about music, or how to play an instrument.
both shows are heavily music based. Given is a lot deeper when it comes to getting to know the characters but both shows being music based is great
