Both were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short (with Tsumiki no Ie actually winning, making it the only non-Miyazaki anime to ever win an Oscar as of the time of this writing). Both use art styles that are not traditionally seen as "anime." Both also involve the main character reflecting on his life - an old man in one and a little kid in the other - by triggering memories by looking around his home/community.
