In terms of context, both have something to do with human experimentation although using different techniques.
The main character of each show (Canaan & Ash) are both overpowered and really good at uh what they do.
The other main characters who form a strong bond with the OP people are Maria who is accompanied by Minoru, just like Eiji who is accompanied by Ibe. All four of them are photographers from Japan going to a foreign country to try to capture something interesting.

Canaan felt similar to Banana Fish in a lot of ways.
Both shows, for starters, are centered around a strong killer trying to take back control of their life and a young, inexperienced person who came barging into their life and slowly started to remind them of their humanity. The difference here is that the genders are flipped since Canaan focuses on 2 women.
The themes are essentially the same. Friendship, love, making the most out of a bad situation, facing your past, finding a meaning to your life and realising what it means to be human.
