Sailor Moon established the Magical Girl genre as it stands today, providing the archetypes that a show like Madoka Magica is manipulating. Both shows center around middle school girls who possess magical powers and use them to fight against evil, accompanied by cute animal guardians which guide their development as heroines. Sailor Moon establishes the storyline that you expect to see replicated in Madoka Magica. Both shows are cute in animation style, which contrasts with their surprising moments of darkness. The young girls in both shows prove to be less naive than they are portrayed, demonstrating acts of personal sacrifice and actively confronting ethical problems.
