Both series have one main male protagonist surrounded by various girls of conflicting personalities. Family issues are part of the plot bringing emotions and drama. Additionally, both MC are considered to have better self control than typical harem leads; not freaking out completely during typical "ecchi" scenes. Both anime(s) also contain plenty of comedy.
I am not a fan of HAREM but these two are exemptions because even though it's about one boy and several girls, the guy is definitely not indecisive just like the typical storyline in any harem which I really hate
Both feature an MC who isn't a standard harem wimp/pervert, and both have a girl who obviously is going to win.

Both are slice-of-life romantic dramas featuring young men who seem cheerful on the surface, but are soon revealed to have a boatload of angst and trauma stemming from a tragic past, and are prone to a mixture of anger and depression. In both cases, they encounter a very shy but extremely sweet and absolutely adorable girl who ends up bringing some long-overdue sunshine and happiness into their lives. However, Tomoya is notably more brooding than Kaoru is and has a considerably rougher personality.
