Bokurano and Saikano do not appear very similar on the surface but they share the same overreaching theme of foreboding doom, subjecting their respective casts to situations of intense despair. Both deal with the end of the world as we know it; in Saikano due to human folly and war and in Bokurano due to a bizarre game of fatal consequences. Both of these shows involve a world-ending catastrophe: however, the main focus is NOT the catastrophe itself, but instead the emotional struggle and turmoil the main characters go through. Saikano hones in on the main couple's romance, drama, and their strenuous relationship as the world falls apart, while Bokurano examines how each of the mecha's pilots choose to interpret their circumstances and use the mecha's power accordingly, for better or for worse. The precious little agency the characters have left, and how the characters choose to use/exploit their power, is the narrative focal point for both shows.
