A pre-Ghibli movie. Follows Mimiko and her encounters with the panda PapaPanda and his son Panny.
As Mimiko is left alone when her grandmother leaves on a trip, she meets a little panda and his father. And they soon decide to become a heartwarming family.
A cute and warming story, and have similar art and scenes.
Easy to see this is where totoro came from.

Panda Kopanda clearly is Totoro's predecessor. Both share the imagery of little girls accompanied by a big round creature, and center around the idea of family.
The general for these two films is presence of extraordinary lovely protagonist. Both of them are laconic, but only having looked on these creations, feel happiness presence.

Big, fat, fluffy creatures simply enjoying their lives, Panda Kopanda almost reads as a primitive blueprint for Totoro and they're both wonderful family friendly watches
both of these have
-a big fluffy animal character that takes care of a little girl
-a fun light-hearted story
-a colorful, cute art/animation style
(also, panda kopanda was written by hayao miyazaki and directed by isao takahata, but predates the existence of studio ghibli!)
Both are Ghibli founders' Sunday morning cartoon about the adventures little children from their own magic reality view. The carefree atmosphere, art and char designs, magic realism and childlike problem solving was picked up and perfected in Totoro. Pana Kopana is it's the beta test version.
