Both are sci-fi set on post-cataclysmic planets (Noman's Land and Mars) with deserts and cities where various factions and bandits run wild.
Each has a non-human protagonist (Vash, a plant and Rouge, a Nean) who teams up with humans in journalism/investigation professions (Naomi and Meryl).

The setting for both anime take place on other planets with main characters who appear to be normal humans but turn out to be not (Rouge is a nean and Vash is a plant). The MCs also have a journalist/investigator-type sidekick (Naomi Ortman in Metallic Rouge and Meryl Stryfe in Trigun Stampede). The division between normal humans and the "artificial" humans (neans or plants) is also a central theme in both anime.
Metallic Rouge has a slightly more mysterious element to it with a MC whose values and motives are not clear to start, whereas Vash comes off as a more straightforward character
