Both shows take the three settings of Feudal Japan, Present Japan, and Fantasical Japan, and then combine it to create their shows. Even if they technically have different themes, romance is a heavy subject within them both, as well as the family clans and powers of their respective worlds involved. The anime adaptations also give off the same feeling, as if watching a novel being breathed into life (yes, I know they are both originally written as novels, that's precisely the point).
