In .hack,the virtual world is an MMORPG,in denno coil,the virtual world is accessed by wearing cyber glasses,both worlds have big mysteries and urban legends concerning their creations that the characters try to figure out,that's just the start,there's more similarities but i don't want to spoil the show,i'll let you discover them.
Denno coil has more action and comedy (the comedy is very present in the first half of the show,it almost completely disapears in the second half) while .hack has a slower pace.
both deal with nearest future, digital reality and coma. they have different atmosphere but similar feeling

Without giving too much information, .hack had a virtual reality that somehow had an effect on the real world. The whole time I was watching Dennou Coil, all I could think about was .hack. Dennou Coil had situations that made me concerned, afraid, and sad for the characters. These were the same feelings I had when watching this particular .hack. The story and animation are different, but I believe they have similar world concepts and moving themes.
