Akira and Lain explore the overwhelming consequences of absolute power. While Akira is more violent on a physical level and Lain is more systematically philosophical, both are anime that force the viewer to think. Disturbingly surreal imagery sets the tone for both series as they twist the fabric of reality itself, uncovering the irrevocable connection between collective hysteria and individual alienation.
It contains physiological breakdowns and other-worldly powers. It focuses a lot on technology and it makes you consider life in a different aspect.

The plots are somewhat alike -- aliens, futuristic society, one human with power going out of control -- but what truly makes these two similar is the vibe: you're left with a strong feeling of mindf*ckery by the time you're done with both of them. They also have similar animation, since they're both 80s/90s classics. Basically, if you're into sci-fi and enjoyed Serial Experiments Lain, you should also enjoy Akira.
Both are Psychological Horror series and are equally fantastic in its own way both of them tells their story in a weird and difficult to understand way at first but if you pay close attention to it you will find that the story is actually very good and its like you're piecing together a puzzle.
