Both involves the Tokugama shogunate (Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohahoheto is set on the final years of the Tokugawa Era while Rurouni Kenshin is set during the beginning stages of the Meiji Era). Both have wandering samurais as protagonists who later settle down with some companion. Both of them have female love interests who are also skilled in swordsmanship. And both animes have real life historical figures (Hajime Saito for RK, Hijikata Toshizo and Okita Souji for BKI who are all part of the Shinsengumi) which the protagonists are acquainted to.

A rurouni is brought into the lives of a small group and ends up in a fight to save the country. BOth rurouni have an idea about their honor, one being to never kill again while the other is to accomplish one particular task.
