Bakemonogatari

Both are love stories laden with weird symbolism and a French New Wave style of art direction that's just perfect for pretentious academically-inclined wankers such as myself!
In both Bakemonogatari and Utena, the environment is alive. You see things happen that wouldn't happen in real life, and the fourth wall tends to be covered in paint. While on the surface they both have simple plots, exorcism and sword-fighting, the actual focus of the series are on the characters' emotions and backstories.
Please check the other anime if you are into surreal mystery series with a greatly written secondary cast, use of symbolism, banger soundtrack and genuinely WTF scenes.
In both Utena and Bakemonogatari, there are deliberate shifts in visual elements between scenes. Whether it's a change in clothing, appearance, or setting, these intentional alterations transcend mere continuity. Instead, they serve as symbolic tools, conveying deeper messages and enriching the narrative through these purposeful visual contrasts.
