Both have intense, brilliantly choreographed, and lavishly animated swordfights and stories that explore themes such as vengeance and the morality of killing. In stark contrast to RuroKen's quiet, contemplative and sentimental tone, however, Afro Samurai is rife with energy, black comedy (in more ways than one), and an overall pop-culture vibe. Where RuroKen's story and presentation can be described as "beautiful", Afro Samurai's would be more accurately described as "badass".

Samurai's and swords, that's the main similarity. Both the main characters have seen slaughter of friend and family before their eyes when they were still little kids. Both anime's contain vengeance of some sort. Rurouni Kenshin is a more serious anime though since Afro Samurai has elements of humor in it, not to mention that Afro is a black samurai. Another thing is that both anime's are only a few episodes long.

They take us back to those times when the samurai were everything. Stories of revenge and personal development, well-established social patterns of the time, with well-established schemes of the time.
