These are both fantasy stories with magic, set in a historical European setting.
There's a theatrical and flamboyant air to both works. The animation and musical scores are amazing in both.
Vanitas is about Vampires, Howl's Moving Castle about wizards. Both are extremely well done series with deep and interesting characters. Both start out lighthearted and get very dark. If you like one, you'll like the other.
I wouldn't be surprised if Vanitas had some inspiration from Howl's Moving Castle.
