The plot in both Ghost in the Shell and Kara no Kyoukai is lightly similar, you have a group of people out to save the day. It's the main characters in both films that strike the most similarities, however. Both Motoko (Ghost in the Shell) and Shiki (Kara no Kyoukai) have very similar personalities, they are both female protagonists with exceptional power and a uniqueness about them. Both GITS and KnK explore themes of humanity and further extensions of humanity; they also share similar protagonists (Motoko and Shiki are alike in personality and appearance), the soundtrack is also similar in style.

Both movies revolve around the theme of human mind going beyond its physical shell. The main heroines are alike in character and appearance. The same mysterious atmosphere, profound dialogues, same degree of action and psychological in both.

Both franchises explore metaphysical concepts, with GiTS being based in science fiction and KnK being based in fantasy. They also have badass female leads and are similar in tone and pacing.

-simular philosophical themes -both Main characters are trapped in a artificial body -both feature pretty well directed fight scenes and solid animation

While “Ghost in the Shell” is sci-fi and “Kara no Kyoukai” is supernatural fantasy, they both tackle heavy and monumental philosophical themes like identity, mind-body dualism, motivation. They spend a great deal of screen time depicting the scenery around in which the tone is somewhat melancholic. The two heroines, Shiki and Motoko, are also eminently similar in both appearance and personality.
