Kaleido Star, Ballroom e Youkoso Recommendations
Kaleido Star has a similar theme at base to Ballroom e Youkoso, and that's dance, passion, strength, and performance.
Similarities:
- Tatara and Sora are similar, not in how Sora already knows acrobatics, they both are weak but show huge potential
- Tatara and Sora are enthusiastic, but also have doubts and frustration throughout their careers. They both experience dancers block (similar to writers block), faults, and mistakes. However they both have hidden potentials that separate them for the rest of the characters
- Both shows are gorgeously animated in separate ways. Ballroom e Youkoso is cleaner, fluid and graceful. However, Kaleido Star (while an older anime) has
incredibly dynamic and constant appealing animation during action scenes.
- Competition. While KS is more focuses on inner competition between characters, there is a clear and definite unison between characters (Sora & Layla, Tatara & Sengoku). There are rivalries in both shows, both friend basis (Sora & Layla, Tatara & Hyodo) and enemy basis (Sora & May, Tatara & Gaju)
- No heavy emphasis on romance, these shows get down to the core of music, dance, and sport of preforming. While there are romantic undertones, the shows both focus on the joy, beauty and strength that comes along with both sports
Differences:
- There is more heavy emphasis on character development in Kaleido Star
- One is about dancing in a performance/stage sense (KS) while BeY is focused on a more modern style of dance, ballroom and competitions.
- It could be argued that these two shows are incredibly different animation wise. However my point above stands that there is a huge amount of care and beauty that go into both shows animation wise. There is little to no CGI (only background cgi in BeY and it's not noticeable unless you really pay attention). Obviously KS is an older show. It's 1:1 ratio unlike BeY.
- Episodes: BeY is going to be much shorter that KS, however BeY has a well developed ongoing manga
