Casshern Sins

These are both series that follow protagonists that do not fully understand their own existence. They have abilities that far surpass that of a normal human and are put in situations that test how much they value (or don't) humanity as a whole. Casshern Sins is much darker in tone and atmosphere, Xam'd is much lighter but no less serious. The animation and art direction in both is fantastic. Xam'd has detail that stands toe to toe with the best of Studio Gibli's films, and Casshern has a moody and expressionistic style that is not easily replicated. Both stand out for their strong visual identity.
