these shows not only have similar plots (MC with multiple love interests) but close animation, too, with almost the same color selection and OPs/EDs - the typical romcom-ish ones. the main difference is in the MCs, not quite alike.

Both anime are harem rom-coms. I think the only major difference is that in Rent a Girlfriend, the MC fakes a relationship, while in Girlfriend, Girlfriend is really dating. The personality of the characters and the arcs of the plot have many similarities.

both have similar comedy, multiple female interest in one character, even you can see so similar art style in both of them, but the main character of them are more likely opposite, so its kinda different

If you want to cringe (good cringe) but still be damned entertained that makes you keep on watching until the end, then these shows are for you.

-MC is bad at making decisions -both romance, comedy, and harem -misunderstandings -the characters are infuriating -school of some sort -girls put up with MC unnecessarily -not a love triangle but like... a love square??? -pink girl, blue girl, yellow girl, and finally, the natural girl with common sense (most of the time)

Almost The Exact Same Plot Except No Money, MC is not lonely, and 4 Girls

In all honesty, both male protagonists for these anime are dense to the situations going on and dumb at other times. What I liked about Girlfriend, Girlfriend, however, is that the male protagonist is actually funny and is impossibly likable despite his faults. Both anime have harems and honestly the girls in Girlfriend, Girlfriend have better chemistry with one another than Rent-A-Girlfriend's, though Rent-A-Girlfriend is not bad, just how Girlfriend, Girlfriend is not a bad anime if you don't attempt to take it too seriously. Really, just casually enjoy the anime.
