The characters share great similarities between trauma and trying to over come it and better themselves. They share a great resolve and wanting to be more and better than their current standings, along with age and other personality similarities.
Kotaro is a modern day setting whereas Ranking of Kings is a more medieval setting but they are still both similar and very sweet and heart breaking in the way the characters are explored.
I have found both wholesome and gut wrenching to watch and would definitely think if you like one the other is worth a try :)
