When both the protagonists were young, things were okay until people found them weird, seeing, hearing, and talking to youkai or ghosts, beings invisible to the normal human eye. So natsume takashi (natsume yuujinchou) and ayazuki mei (meiji tokyo renka) became outcasts and frequently isolated themselves socially. As they grow up and realize that others don't see and experience what they do, they cover it up with smiles and kindness.
