From the very first episode, these two series are very similar. Both have cheeky, reckless protagonists that work as a space/bounty hunter. Both have basically the same setting— a distant future, in galaxy far, far away. Both also have lots of great comedy.
Outlaw Star and Space Dandy tie its themes together with the presentation of a space adventure. The main male protagonist has a partner that travels with them on a journey of discovery.
Along the way, they encounter both allies and foes while making learning about new wonders of the universe. Both series adapts sci-fi themes into its perspective so expect action, drama, and an adventurous tone of delivery.
Both Space Dandy and Outlaw Star have great animation, humor, and characters. Each takes place in a distinct, immense universe where space travel is of the norm and humans and other lifeforms reside among the various worlds within.
But most importantly, both anime have a strong sense identity and purpose, and that purpose is to both enjoy themselves and entertain their audiences in the process. True, the methods can differ from time to time, but in the end, both want the same thing: to just have fun.
