Both revolve around rebirth and specifically spending your renewed life to discover and absolve yourself of past sin; a lot of imagery is shared as well, with the moments "I" comes back into life resembling very closely Rakka's cocoon dream.

Both of these anime deal with self discovery. But while Haibane Renmei is about learning who you are to move on and liberate yourself, Colorful (Movie) is about learning who you are to reorient yourself in life. They're each other's antithesis on the same subject.

Both shows deal with souls set apart from the usual system of reincarnation and given a time-limited chance to correct the errors of their former lives.

These are two stories about characters dealing with their own existence. I won't go into the story spoilers as to why, but they find themselves in unfamiliar places and have to come to terms with themselves. The art in both is great, and they both feel like they could have come from the same era, despite Haibane coming out nearly 10 years prior. They both left me feeling similar things, though Haibane took me on more of an emotional roller-coaster toward the end.
