They both have similar dark, grim and intense atmosphere of a true thriller. The center of the plot is a mystery which revolves around a series of mystical murders and is investigated by the characters. And the story itself presented in disconnected way, so you have to piece it together like a puzzle.
Mystery and mayhem. Twisted characters and grisly deaths. Atmospheric approach and supernatural vibrations.
A puzzling, non-linear, slow-paced story where everyone is connected, requiring solid attention span, brought to you by MadHouse studio.

Both are very slow paced mysteries told in a non-linear way. If you want to grab the little pieces and make a puzzle out of what you watch, both are the best for you. Mind you, they're both dense and confusing.
Ah, they're both works of Madhouse too.
Two excellent thriller series with complex storytelling and plenty of dark imagery. Both series show what happens in a non-chronological manner which adds a lot to the mystery behind both stories. So if you're in the mood for a good thriller/semi-horror story, and enjoyed Boogiepop Phantom or Mouryou no Hako, the other series will most certainly
