Both have male leads who have a friendship that runs deep and would almost make some believe that they are lovers. Both have a work together and lean on one another through the odds are faced even when they aren't being honest. Both have drama related to the past and things that need to be dealt with for the sake of their future lives.
I think the greatest coincidence between the two shows is how their japanese protagonists look alike. Eiji (Banana Fish) and Seiji (The case Files of Jeweler Richard, hereinafter The Case Files) have a similar appearance and personality that in the end causes both to be involved in the affairs of their respective foreign partners. In addition, in both there is a certain Bl air without becoming Bl but with certain doses of fanservice. the two main character take risks to help each other and its very heartwarming. they care very deeply for each other.
in many ways, ash and richard are very alike, and eiji and seigi too. of course, they are not exactly alike but examples would be bits of their personalities and backgrounds.
