Basically starts off with both lead males getting killed and then fighting alongside the females that have saved them. And bad guys also feed off human life for the most part.

For both Busou Renkin and Shakugan No Shana are the ingredients swords and school boys and girls, along with a little romance between the main characters. Both Yuji and Kazuki try to do their best to protect the unknowing human society so that they can live on with their lives without getting killed. Although the story is completely different, they do share a lot resemblance, so if you liked the one, you will like the other.
In both anime's it starts with a boy and girl within a fight. Now both males have died within thus fight however both found a way to survive. It may be the midsumer nights child or the power of alchemy. Now these "Powers" allow both males to fight along side the stronger female characters. Both get hurt and endangered and leave it up to the female to save them.
The traits within the males are quite similar, both wish to be as useful and strong as possible. They then get strong enough to achieve their goal.
Both we're great anime's and are almost identical in multiple ways
