Both shows include a great and original world revolving around a strange underground place made up of layers, each layer having its own ecosystem and different landscape. The main characters try to explore this place and its hidden mysteries and we are exposed to its history progressively and through the myths and legends around it. The adventure thrill you get from both shows is just very similar. The shows differ in that Cooking and food is a main theme in Dungeon Meshi while the main theme of Made in Abyss is Children suffering (and toilet humour). Dungeon Meshi is also more lighthearted than Made in   read more

Both surround a group of loveable characters heading towards to bottom of a mysterious hole/dungeon, passing through each one of it's layers, with worse things awaiting them on each one. Both have similar body horror elements which twist it's original playful tone very well (Made In Abyss moreso). Made In Abyss is still the better show by a mile, Dungeon Meshi tends to focus on food which detracts from it's main interesting plot too much for my liking. But both enjoyable watches.

- Both have the dungeon-exploration - Both has somewhat cutesy character looks . But, Made in Abyss is very dark and morbid compared to Dungeon Meshi. Maybe if the dangerous situations in Dungeon Meshi were shown as terrifying and the upbeat music was changed into something eerie, then it'd be almost exactly like Made in Abyss

World building is a very strong aspect of both series, that much is obvious, but I am surprised that no one talks about how similar the 2 show's world building style/strengths really are. Dungeon is just a different flavour of abyss, a long downwards spiral, where each layer has it's own ecosystem, all of which interconnects into a certain masterfully played out cohesiveness, that makes the setting feel more "real" than most other fantasy. If you look at the cooking scenes in made in abyss in particular, it becomes painfully obvious how they both go about world building the exact same way. So if you are a fan   read more

Both themes are based on exploring an unknown place, the deep or the dungeon. The characters are in both anime very well-built and in both series, there are traces of crude events (a bit less crude in dungeon meshi).

This shows are completly different but... the same? Dungeon Meshi has "cozy" and happy appearance at first, the same thing goes for Made In Abyss. At some point both anime have dark turn that only becomes darker and darker and more creepy as the shows continuous Sadly in made in abyss you wont see a lot of cooking which is big part of the Dungeon Meshi but i think the world of "abyss" and how amazing world building is will make up to lack of cooking!
