Both about things related to the afterlife. Shigofumi follows some stories related to students and how they cope with their life and what lead to certain situations which is basically the whole premise of Colorful.
Both create a detailed sociogram of teenager problems including depression, bullying, and suicide. Both use a supernatural observers from the afterlife as the key plot device to allow for a 10,000 foot view on the situation. While Colorful is a rather slow burning drama and Shigofumi a thriller, along with Paranoia Agent both are one of only very few anime seriously examining the reasons for teenage suicide.
