Overall this recommendation is because both series are special for how they treat their characters and topics despite what it may seem from their cover.
In both series the characters have a strong desire to live with their passions, but they gonna face many and diverse obstacles in the way, there's gonna be emotional moments for sure.
Both have well written develop of their characters, and drama around their motivations that touches darker topics than you can expect from a series like these, i would recommend everyone who enjoyed one story to check the other one.
However i think Blue Period show these aspects quickly than Idolish7,

In both shows they have characters that wanna reach their dream, but they'll face a lot of obstacles along the way.
In both animes the characters gonna face their personal problems, traumas and the reality that their fields came with. The characters have a good development of their relationships and they have personal growth as well.

Both shows are similar in the way they not only focus on the main part (art in Blue Period and idols on Idolish7), but also they explore the characters emotions, backgrounds, moivations, mental struggles and other stuff, i think a lot of people can find comfort in both animes who can teach you a little about how you have to live your life to be a little more happy with it :)

Both animes use an artistic expression (art and music) to make the characters go trough a journey where they gonna face the up and downs of the entertainment industry/art world. Both animes are very dramatic and touch serious topics in a well handle good way.
Both are stories about the hard journey of the characters to reach success in their artistic activity, there's tons of drama and with a special direction to make you feel their perspective of the angst moments, they're pretty creative sometimes.
Also both animes show part of the reality of both worlds, the art business and the idol industry, the ups and downs.
Both are anime that focus on the reality that the characters go through to carry out an artistic activity, they are generally dramatic but have charismatic and relatable characters that will make you fall in love with them.

Both animes are about the difficult road for the characters to get better in a activity, the animes explore the characters in a deep way and the show explore different aspects of a the activity that the characters show interest (entertainment industry and art world)
Both are about the realistic world of the characters dreams/aspirations (idol entertainment and art world), both have characters with traumas and issues that have to deal with it, the animation in both are decent and the dramatic moments are a little similar at moments
Both animes shows the reality behind the image that we all have of a certain activity, in Blue Period is for the Art, in Idolish7 for the idol industry. Both have characters with carismatic personalities but with sad and painful backgrounds or conflicts, they portray the dramatic moments in a interesting way too.
