Both animes are set during an European historical time period and setting with gothic styled architecture and feature young noblemen whom have affiliations towards the throne/royal palace. There are darker plots and heavier themes which often revolve around political corruption. The art styles, choice of color palate, aesthetic, and clothing worn are very similar. There is also that very subtle hint of romanticism between the characters as so common amongst older animes.
