They both are episodic, supernatural and deal with society's matters such as suicide, school bullies, sexual abuse... with a mature look at them.
Though Paranoia Agent is more psychedelic and dysfunctionnal while Shigofumi is more bittersweet.

There is an underlining societal commentary in both of them, and the execution is done very similarly. On the surface, the plots aren't all that similar, but both shows fit together well somehow. There are many subtle things they share.

Both shows touch dark themes such as suicide, child abuse, and mental illness and give societal commentary. Both have the form of a mildly episodic supernatural thrillers. Shigofumi has more of a linear plot, it just starts episodically. Paranoia Agent has a more dementia and satire elements, where Shigofumi is mellower and melancholic (not depressing).
