I haven't felt anything similar in Haibane Renmei as to NGE. Though it may seem like an odd comparison, the if you understand they psychology behind it, it begins to make sense. They both give me hope. It reminds you why you need to survive and struggle -- why it's worth it. It reminds you that to be the very definition of human we need freewill to make our own mistakes and learn and grow from it, or it will inevitably eat you alive. While in many ways opposite in terms of execution, the similarities in symbolism, introspection, character exposition, and a feel for mystery in world development give these two comparable goals and create a sense of familiarity between one another.

While both shows have very different literal plots, some of the main themes behind them are the same: - The exploration of mental illness, particularly depression, without directly naming it. In NGE this is explored through the majority of the characters and in Haibane Renmei it is explored through Rakka and Reki. (Though it can be argued that other characters are implied to be involved in this theme.) - Giving hope for people in such situations. Both shows do not shy away from the seriousness of mental illness, but utilize the acknowledgement of such struggles to provide the message that despite all this, you can save yourself.   read more

Both are somber and downbeat series with a focus around angels with their interactions with the human race and lots of poigant and facinating psychological elements in it as well too and a focus around some very touchy themes as well too during the story.

For me, Eva and Haibane are the best psychological anime out there. Both deal with similar themes like loss, guilt and self-acceptance. Both series also share kinda similar characters. The main difference is that, while Eva is a mecha anime (And thus, is more action focused), Haibane is for all intents and purposes a slice of life anime.
