1. Both shows use superficial elements (mecha fights and shogi games) to emmmask a complex and deep psychological drama.
2. Teenage and antisocial protagonist who has suffered a terrible family misfortune.
3. Love-hate relationship between the protagonist and a grumpy red-haired girl.
4. The protagonist's special relationship with a boy (adult in Sangatsu) with white hair and "angelic" appearance.
Neon Genesis and Sangatsu no Lion aren't necessarily similar in terms of plot, but they do share similar psychological themes through each of the characters throughout their respective stories.
And to state the obvious a depressed teenage boy as the protagonist has to deal with a feisty redhead and have characters named Rei in both shows
