Kaneki and Shinji are the closest parallels when it comes to protagonists in all of anime. The motifs borrowed are innumerable and unmistakeable. Plus both franchises have much more progression and surprises in store for them yet to come. Kaneki even more so. While tokyo ghoul can be a little lax with its lackluster comedy and lackluster character designs, eva is all about realism.
- Both of the main characters are pulled into something they didn't want to be involved in
- Starts off as action based until it veers off into a psychological plot near the end
- The actions scenes become completely irrelevant as you dive into the character's traumatic existential crisis

Main character is a little bitch who needs to be a man already. Tsundere female supporting cast. Ending that leaves a lot to be desired. Extreme amounts of gore that serves the plot. And awesome opening number. NGE and Tokyo Ghoul leave the viewer with asking the same question: what does it mean to be human?
Tokyo Ghoul, like NGE, starts off slow to build up to an unforeseeable ending.
Tokyo Ghoul and NGE resemble one another, a true common theme, albeit these particular anime stood out amongst the crowd with high proclaimed history. Said stories feature a young man who is drawn into a situation they otherwise could not have said no to; anyone would have given the lives that were to come.
Hell, and nothing else, Kaneki and Shinji are already given the very meaning of their lives in an unconsented and untimely fashion. There is no going back to the old life, this new dark light is all that awaits them. It gives them strength, however, to find a reason why despite such
