Atmosphere in both is so similar! Colorful art with game themes, at some point characters are travelling in a group, buying items for crystals and money and solving political problems, like in game. Music is also similar - very touching and peaceful while they travel, showing us fantasy scenery with sunrise light and talking about friendship themes, but sometimes it has more action and it happens of course when we have some fights, because in both animes we'll see them. In both our main character is taken to another world, where he meets monsters, elves, loli girls, etc.

Both shows are based on the idea of a regular human or regular humans coming to another fantasy-like world. The MCs feel somewhat overpowerd (strong video game character / military weapons) and are in charge of a couple of subjects. Politics in said new world as well as the inner workings of the new world are a heavy focus in both shows and have a similar feel to them.
Main characters truly influence how good a particular show is,
Itami Youji and Lord Momonga have done a fantastic job on being one. Follow Lieutenant Itami in Gate series on his adventures with his troops or watch Lord Momonga in Overlord who is an awesome skeleton king that takes over the world with his awesome anti-hero acts!
These Anime are both similar in the sense that they are both taking place in another world, in Gate a portal opens up in japan and the army goes in to investigate, in Overlord a game which was meant to be shut down doesn't, instead of shutting down the game turns into reality and the remaining in-game players are trapped inside. Both of these series have a lot in common, such as:
