These movies share a similar plot in a sense of boy meets mermaid and magical endeavors ensue. Ponyo and Lu over the wall are two very differently stylized movies respectively. If you enjoyed Ponyo and want to see a different approach to boy meets mermaid with added musical elements I would recommend Lu over the wall.

- Both about a relationship between a male human kid and a childish female sea creature.
- Both contain warm and colorful visuals.
- Both films have a family atmosphere.
- Both Events happening in a town by a sea.
When I saw Yoake Tsugeru Lu no Uta, all that I could thought was "this is some kind of reboot of Ponyo"(I´m not saying this in a bad way). It´s almost the same history, a boy found a fish girl and stablish a relationship with her, the looks of Lu and ponyo are pretty similar and their personalitty it´s similar also, the magic of imposible water it´s a focus in both films, there is even a pretty obvious conection with both fathers but it would be spoiler.

Both are family-friendly films that have a mermaid girl and a human boy as the two main characters. If "Ponyo" is only loosely based on the Hans Christian Andersen story, "Lu Over the Wall" is even further removed. Both stories take you to places you never imagined you'd end up at, though in different ways in accordance with the styles of their respective directors. Whatever else I could say, others before me have said better.
Both are very heart warming stories about the relationship between a boy and a little mermaid. But as a work of Yuasa Masaaki, you should expect it to be more mature themed and have unusual art style.

This might be the obvious choice. Both Yoake Tsugeru Lu no Uta and Ponyo are about a boy who befriends a mermaid. Both mermaids have an innocent outlook on the world, and they both became instantly attached to their human friend. Both mermaids have a protective father, and both humans are raised by a single parent. (Kai's mother living away in Tokyo, and Sosuke's father being out fishing.) Also both films contain a great flood. In Ponyo the flood is caused by the Ponyo being taken from the sea, and in Yoake Tsugeru Lu no Uta, it's caused by Lu and her father being nearly
