Both stories involve a friendship between a kind-hearted human and an innocent fish (taking on the appearance of a human). Ponyo is about an innocent love between two children, where Tsuritama is about creating friendships and working hard to understand each other.

Both mention the story of a goddess and are in a island. Both have a character that can live under water. Water, friendship and the goal to save a place after a calamity arrives are the central themes.

The coast, the sea, and fish! Both have swell water animation and light-hearted.

Both have stunning oceanic animation, making use of many bright and bold colors, with an 'alien'-ish character living with a human. Fun and uplifting.

-Perfect vibe for summer break!--heartwarming and happy seaside fun -fish, that are people, that are actually fish, that are really treasured friends (@_@) fish are friends, not food? -Beautiful scenes centered around the magical, mystical ocean, -and protective fathers -friendly, welcoming mother figures -flooding of a village -being lost at sea -being friends forever

Both are light-hearted with nice colour palettes, set close to the ocean, and about a friendship between a human and a fish taking the form of a human (strange as that sounds) They're both nice and short to watch when you feel down, though Tsuritama is a 12 episode series while GUP is only a movie.

In both Ponyo and Tsuritama, they are both set in a peaceful fishing town. Until overtaken by aquatic life under the control of a magical power, they must set out to try and restore peace to the land. Both series seem to bring out a bit of an innocent and adventurous young spirit.
