Although both anime vary significantly in the overall atmosphere and theme they share couple significant similarities.
Both storylines follow a young male protagonist with a female companion waging a fight against monsters that threaten the human civilization. Both duo of protagonists also possess some unique power originating from their sworn enemy; in both cases they are half-human and half of the other. Aside form that, the main villain of both series leads their campaign, which causes suffering and death to completely innocent people, out of personal vendetta.
The Koutetsujou no Kabaneri is set in a much darker tone (comparable to that of Attack on Titan)
