The two plots are about an underdog in his final year of high school who still doesn't know what to peruse after finishing. That is before he comes a cross a sports discipline he's gifted at.
While Hajime no Ippo focuses on boxing and the tone is more serious, Ballroom e Youkoso is about dancing and is more light hearted. With that said, both stories deliver a compelling story about a boy slowly finding his identity and excelling in what he's good at
While watching Ballroom e Youkoso the one anime that sprung out as similar was Hajime no Ippo.
If you enjoy watching a relatively weak and timid MC gradually become a confident and strong person through the medium of their choice, ballroom dancing and boxing, then you are sure to enjoy these anime.
Similarities include an awesome older brother type figure who is a total boss, a similar aged rival who is better than them, a story that gradually feed the MC bigger and bigger challenges to overcome, and MC's who work extremely hard to get where to where they want to go.

I wish we can +1 to other recommendations.
Anyway, I wanted to support the guy who said
Fujita=Ippo
Hyodo=Miyata
Sengoku=Takamura
When I heard sengoku talking I thought he had the same seiyuu as takamura for a few second. I didn't check, but the tone and personality that they have towards their "students" is really similar. Hyodo and miyata is a bit different, but explaining why would be a spoiler. I really did not expect myself to like Ballroom but it's really a good sports anime just like hajime no ippo. Can we talk about episode 1? (its in the synopsis anyway), but both mcs were saved from bullies and then

Both plots develop in the meta space of Korakuen Hall.
Now, seriously, both series have similar characters, even though the sport of both shows drive them to pretty different developments, since boxing is a sport that consist mostly of being better than the other sportsman on the ring, this allows a relationship of deciding who is the most strong and intelligent boxer between both participants, while competitive dancing is more of having an intense synchronicity with your partner, this allowing relationships that are built on a foundation of trust and fellowship, sometimes even love.
The humour is also very different, but both are hilarious shows, Ippo being

It's very similiar to Ippo. Weak character that want to change get's into boxing/Ballroom dancing through a worldwide pro Takamura/Sengoku. Ippo/Tatara both look up to a guy and see him as a rival Miyata/Hyoudo.
If you like Ippo and is open minded then you will probably love Ballroom e Youkoso

Both shows follow the story of a bullied teenager who discovers the love for a sport thanks to a strong mentor. Tatara also seems to be on the path of growing as a more mature person while becoming better at the sport, much like Ippo.

They both follow quite similar plot lines to an extent. Both follow a formerly bullied protaginist who uses the introduction of a new sport to give direction to their life. Both feature the early introduction of a professional whose hard and unforgiving training regime begins with a task which they exspect the protaginist never overcome. Both begin their journey with the protaginist taking home a recording of past competetions which enthralls them. Both come from a family with a single parent that struggles to make ends meet. Both begin to compete in the sport in a competition setting reasonably early on in the series.
