The animes share a similar tone of comedy.
SZS is slice of life whereas BSD is action.
The main character in SZS is a suicidal maniac, similar to Dazai.
Both Nozomu Itoshiki and Osamu Dazai literally wants to end everything once and for all, but their plot armor is too strong to handle.
I don't know which came first but one definitely influenced the other in my opinion. Both have a main character who wants to die, everybody else has to deal with the mindset this character has and somehow they both help people and mess up other people's lives at the same time. If you've watched both of these anime, you'll know who the characters are. I love both. Haven't watched the next few seasons of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei so I don't know if the tone will change but both are very funny.
