They have very similar main characters, down to their character design. And they have a similar relationship with each other. The animation in the music scenes of both is great too. They're slice of lives, they start with a school transfer and they end with a separation. But most importantly, if Sakamichi no Apollon made you love jazz, Piano no Mori will make you love classical. Or vice-versa.
They are pretty much have the same types of characters with different stories. They star mainly two young boys who love to play music. The boys have very similar character traits with one being poor and the outgoing type that tends to fight and plays music because he loves too. While the other is rich and shy tends to take himself seriously and does it both because he enjoys it and out a sense of duty.
