Both Shiki and Hitsuji no Uta contain intricat plots involving vampires. Instead of the run-of-the-mill KILL THEM ALL concept, both shows bring forth different spins, bringing a different respect to vampire-based anime. Granted, both of these shows have entirely different plots (Shiki focusing on vampires trying to take over a vilage and the morality of murder, where as Hitsuji no Uta focuses on the concept of vampirism being a hereditary illness), the two share common elements in their ability to create a tense, eerie atmosphere and possess a story told in a serious tone.

Both shows take a neutral if not sympathetic positions on vampires. They show the hardships in their "life", the emotional damage the hurting or killing others causes, how humans can feel pity with vampires and "feed" them and so on. In short, vampires are portrayed as life different from us, with their own share of problems and not as monsters. Shiki's cast is large and faces a standoff with villagers to the point of outright battle, where Hitsuji no Uta has the focus on a sibling couple and their closer social circle of friends and family.
