Both are Sanrio anime that have a focus on people's dreams. They feature talking plushie-esque animals from a magical land coming to the human world and partnering with a group of girls. To avoid spoilers, the best way to put it is that a lot of the characters and situations are so similar they feel like they were intentionally borrowed from Onegai My Melody for Mewkledreamy.
Both with stuffed plushies going to Earth from a magical land and sorting out people's dreams as the main characters aim to defeat the evil within a colourful, vibrant setting.
Sanrio produced both shows and the way both work in terms of character archetypes/chemistry have very similar aspects, even when you go to the 2nd season of both too.
All in all, both fun shows with younger generations as target audiences.
If I had to say there was a difference, it's that Mewkledreamy is more light-hearted, even though My Melody is already so, as a whole from start to finish.
