If you are feeling like “Oh drat, that dick boss makes me show him how to reboot his router again, I’m exhausted body and mind, I need refreshment. Yes, maybe I should take a bath, have some fries and watch that good stuffs I got the other day. What does it call? MAGICAL GIRL? And some comedy called SCHOOL DAYS? Oh I’m gonna have my great time with cute anime chicks and of course without idiot boss, heck yeah.” (This is the rendition of an exhausted working man at the best extent the writer can imagine, as he is currently unemployed.)
However, both shows “first impression”

Similar in that it appears to be a light hearted anime about love and then suddenly dun dun dun!

Both of these shows start out pretty innocent and sweet, but early on there's a plot twist that completely changes the mood of the show. Both of these anime are also famous deconstructions. Madoka deconstructs magical girl anime while School Days deconstructs the harem genre. Both of these shows are worth checking out if you like dark anime.
Both shows take the conventions and ideas of an established genre and rework them into a dark series with a heavy emphasis on negative character development.

Nope this is not a joke, these two series have a fundamental similarity which cannot be ignored. These shows fundamentally break down their respective genre by showing you what would happen if people were really thrown into the situations found in anime:
-School days shows what would probably happen if a generic teenager found a harem of girls forming around him
- Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica shows what would probably happen if young girls were given magical powers and expected to fight

Among the shows you can't judge by their cover you have School Days and Mahou Shoujou Madoka Magica. Despite the apparence they have dark tones, their general concept becomes "clearer" the more episodes you watch, which means it is required to watch many episodes if not all of them "to get it". Due to their uniqueness they are must-watch, at least for reference.
It's harder to appreciate school days than madoka magica though because the concept is somewhat more extreme and school days has also many flaws due maybe to the too ambitious storyline.
Note : avoid spoilers avoid reading reviews the more you can

Both of them look like a cute shoujo anime on the outside, then both the Anime take a dark turn, which makes the shows a little more interesting.

You thought you were in for a cute anime? Unfortunately, you won't find that here, despite looks, School Days and Madoka Magica are both anime that does a complete 180 to the viewer, subverting expectations quite well in such a manner too.
Although it is more like a cumulative turnaround with School Days than PMMM, both anime still have that one turning point in their stories that quite literally changes how everything plays out. It is no happy turn around too, it is there to serve as the catalyst to what are some of the most memorable stories I could ever suggest to one. School Days
