Old Japan, prison, boxing, stubborn characters (!) and both are really sad
report Recommended by Kise
They both have similar settings, boxing, kids with really rough lives but manage to somehow get by and the roughness of early 1900's japan.

Rainbow seems heavily inspired by Ashita no Joe. Both are the stories of boys with nothing to their names, juvenile prison, boxing, tragedy, and drama. The historical setting allows them both to have the same simple yet poor setting of post-WWII Japan, where dreams shine brightly amidst the sad reality.

Both are set in post-World War II Japan, these anime center around underprivileged boys who navigate the tumultuous landscapes of juvenile incarceration, the pugilistic realm of boxing, and a profoundly poignant journey filled with tragedy and heart-wrenching drama.
