Apart from sharing an identical plot, these anime have many character similarities (Harima Kenji/Misao Zaitsu, Eri Sawachika/Kei Enomoto, Tenma Tsukamoto/Koyoi Bessho, etc), not to mention that in both series the relationship chart is pretty intricate.
Both are highly enjoyable school comedies with plenty of love triangles and misunderstandings.

Very similar in the fact that both series rely on complicated love triangles (probably being too generous here. You'd need a flow chart to map out the love interests) as a major plot device.

Both have a Big strong guy falling for a girl for no particular reason. Both of them guys love the girl they have fallen for with unconditional love. Harima/Misao seek to protects, care for, and sacrifices himself for the girl he loves even though Tenma/Ayumi already loves anther person. Harima/Misao may seem to have a hard exterior but it seems that beyond the multiple fights they get involved with they are both kind hearted (More so Misao then Harima) and loves animals.

Edit
Extreme complex love polygons. Everyone likes someone who likes another person.

Both series are lighthearted slice-of-life comedies that don't really take themselves too seriously.
There are a lot of similar characters in the series. You can pretty much find a counterpart for every character in the other series (Tenma = Ayumi, Eri = Kei, Harima = Misao ..... you get the idea).
Also both series tend to spend a few episodes on each of the characters and then move on to the next. Because of that, it is very difficult to classify anyone as "the main character". Rather, there really isn't such a thing as a main character in either series.

Hatsukoi Limited has a gentler comedy and art style (similar to Minami Ke), but both deals with high school love from various angles. School Rumble focused more on comedic situations that arose from complex web of one sided love, Hatsukoi Limited focuses more on each character's thoughts and actions for their love.
Although high school romance is portrayed in different ways, both animes explore strikingly different situations from different types of love, but most importantly: leave you with warm and fuzzy feelings that you can only get from love comedy~
