This may seem a bit of a stretch, but both series have very dark storylines involving lots of delicious manipulation and mind-screwery. They also each have characters pursuing their own controversial brand of justice.

Both are top notch psychological thrillers. They both rely heavily on suspense, and incredbly dramatic scenes. Both are tighly written, intense, gripping, and intellegent. They have the punch of an action series, and the smarts of a character drama. You will be on the edge of your seat for both of theses...fans of one, be sure to check out the other!
Betrayal! Murder! Revenge! Insane laughter! Epic over-the-top plots you can't help but love! Both series are built on the insanely detailed and just plain insane Xanatos gambits crafted by the characters, Death Note having a gambit war develop between Light and L and Gankutsuou just having everyone get swept away by the tidal wave of Edmond's ridiculously well-thought-out wrath and vengeance.

Masterfully crafted plans slowly unfold as the viewer is left in a state of utter bewilderment - that's how both of those are for the most part. Only a small fraction of truth is given right away, the rest comes in tiny pieces or big game changers. The two will keep you on the edge of your seat, making sure no boredem can ever come into play. They differ greately when it comes to exposition, but that should have no effect on the enjoyment; I strongly believe that a classic tale of revenge will appeal to the fans of Light's grand schemes.
